Chapter 11: The fall
In
the aftermath of her family's turmoil, Haleema faced the challenge of managing
her deteriorating home alone. Determined, she cleaned every corner of the
house, sweeping dust, beating rugs, and scrubbing stubborn stains. Despite her
exhaustion and chest pain, she persevered, occasionally using an inhaler to
cope with her breathing difficulties. Haleema refrained from cleaning Ab Jaan’s
and Imran’s rooms, haunted by the hope of their return. She often felt
overwhelmed by despair, evident in moments like when she sobbed uncontrollably
while preparing a meal. Financially strained, Haleema sought help from the
Imam. She expressed her need to sell her orchard, which had fallen into
disrepair. The Imam agreed to assist and, after negotiations, sold the land for
four lakhs, with Haleema's consent. The orchard was quickly transformed into a
construction site, obscuring the trees and marking a significant change in
Haleema’s life.
One
day, at a chest specialist’s clinic, Haleema unexpectedly encountered her
estranged husband. He looked older, frail, and unkempt compared to her
memories. Despite the years of separation and hardship, seeing him stirred a
mix of panic, surprise, and curiosity in Haleema. Their brief, uncomfortable
encounter left her reflecting on their past and contemplating her future,
wondering if they might meet again.
