Chapter 17: Appearances and Disappearances

Haleema continues to wait for her missing son, Imran, with unwavering hope despite the passage of time. She spends the night in a state of despair and anticipation, staring out the window and listening to the sounds of the night. The chapter vividly describes her nightly vigil, highlighting her emotional and physical exhaustion. As the night wears on, Haleema's hope is briefly rekindled when she hears a knock at her door. To her astonishment, Imran, wearing an army hat and carrying a file, stands before her. Overwhelmed with relief and emotion, Haleema does not question him but embraces him, sensing his exhaustion and distress. Imran requests not to be asked about his past and seeks solace in his mother’s presence. He tells her he has been running for a long time and simply wants to rest. Haleema soothes him and asks about the contents of the file he carries. Imran explains it holds records of his travels. As he falls asleep in her lap, Haleema is comforted but also tormented by a vivid dream of losing him in a crowded market, emphasizing her ongoing fear and anxiety about his safety.

 

The chapter ends with Haleema waking up to the sound of a knock and realizing it is morning. Her friend Sakeena arrives, reminding her of a protest meeting at Pratap Park that has been disrupted by police. The chapter closes with Haleema’s confusion and concern about the changes in their plans, reflecting the ongoing struggles and uncertainties in her life.
