Chapter 17: Appearances and
Disappearances
Haleema
continues to wait for her missing son, Imran, with unwavering hope despite the
passage of time. She spends the night in a state of despair and anticipation,
staring out the window and listening to the sounds of the night. The chapter
vividly describes her nightly vigil, highlighting her emotional and physical
exhaustion. As the night wears on, Haleema's hope is briefly rekindled when she
hears a knock at her door. To her astonishment, Imran, wearing an army hat and
carrying a file, stands before her. Overwhelmed with relief and emotion,
Haleema does not question him but embraces him, sensing his exhaustion and
distress. Imran requests not to be asked about his past and seeks solace in his
mother’s presence. He tells her he has been running for a long time and simply
wants to rest. Haleema soothes him and asks about the contents of the file he
carries. Imran explains it holds records of his travels. As he falls asleep in
her lap, Haleema is comforted but also tormented by a vivid dream of losing him
in a crowded market, emphasizing her ongoing fear and anxiety about his safety.
