Chapter
4: Executive Bond
The chapter opens with
a reflective moment where Imran, now a teenager, considers shaving for the
first time. Despite his masculine features, he is self-conscious about his
appearance, particularly the stubble on his face, which his classmates tease
him about. He tries to handle the razor but feels embarrassed afterward, hiding
his face, particularly from Haleema, who teases him affectionately about his
self-consciousness.
As he matures
physically, growing tall and adopting a deep voice, there is a subtle shift in
his relationship with his mother. He seems more like her protector, taking on a
role that feels more adult, as if he is transitioning from being a son to
almost a husband like figure, as hinted in the playful exchanges between them.
Haleema jokes about how no trick could deceive a mother, a reflection of their
strong bond.
Imran develops a keen
interest in mechanical tasks, learning how to fix household items like table
lamps, electric torches, and broken appliances. His skills extend to solving
complex issues, such as fixing the mosque's leaking bathroom, a task that had
baffled others. Alongside this, Imran helps Haleema with her traditional wool
spinning, an activity that has provided income for the family to support his
education.
Haleema’s health takes
a turn for the worse as she starts to experience severe breathlessness,
diagnosed as bronchitis. Her condition worsens quickly, leaving her struggling
with basic tasks. Imran and his father, Ab Jaan, take her to a physician who
prescribes medications. The gravity of Haleema’s illness profoundly affects
Imran, who feels an overwhelming sense of responsibility but is also
emotionally overwhelmed, unsure how to express his fear and sadness.
As Haleema becomes
bedridden, Imran assumes her responsibilities in the household. He begins to
wake up early to fetch bread, assist with cooking, and ensure she takes her
medicine. He carefully attends to her needs, such as preparing her tea and
washing her handkerchiefs stained with phlegm. His dedication and maturity in anaging
these tasks reflect his transformation from a carefree boy into a dutiful
caregiver.
Imran's daily life is
now focused on Haleema’s care, from checking her pulse to ensuring she has
everything she needs while juggling his school responsibilities. The bond
between them is palpable, with Imran now fully understanding the weight of
responsibility and the meaning behind the love and care that Haleema had once
provided for him.
Ab Jaan also adjusts to
Haleema’s illness, taking on tasks such as feeding the cattle and chickens and
refraining from smoking inside the house to protect her health. The family’s
dynamic has shifted, with everyone rallying around Haleema, who had once been
the cornerstone of the household.
